On the opposite side of my UFC 123 winners article, here is what I want to see happen to guys on the wrong end of the outcomes last Saturday.
Lyoto Machida— Lost a close, somewhat controversial split decision to Rampage Jackson. I still believe Machida is easily a top 5 light heavy heavyweight. I want to see him gain some of his mystique and killer instinct back. Lets give him a hot up and comer instead of an established guy for a change. Machida’s last 5 fights are an impressive list: Rampage, Shogun, Shogun, Rashad, and Thiago Silva. I think the winner of Jon Jones vs. Ryan Bader should get a shot at the title, so how about Machida vs. the loser.
Matt Hughes— Lost via highlight reel knockout to BJ Penn in 21 seconds. I doubt he is going to retire and I would expect to see him back him in the octagon this spring. I still think Hughes is a relevant welterweight regardless of his quick knockout loss. I want to see him try to get a win against his nemesis, Dennis Hallman. Hallman has beaten him twice in less then 30 seconds each time.
Gerald Harris— Lost a decision to UFC newcomer Miaquel Falcao. I don’t know what to think about Harris. He’s very athletic and has a strong wrestling
background but doesn’t use it. Besides losing the fight to Falcao, it wasn’t a very exciting one and generally a poor performance. I’d like to see him take on another respectable opponent to see if he belongs around the better guys in the UFC. Dan Miller (banking on him beating Doerkson at 124) works for me.
Tim Boetsch— Dominated by Phil Davis before being submitted via modified kimura in round 2. I am pretty much impartial to Boetsch staying in the UFC or not. If he doesn’t get cut give him Karlos Vemola.
Joe Lauzon— Started strong but faded fast in a submission loss to George Sotiropoulos. This wasn’t the first time he faded in a fight. Like watching him fight, needs a better gas tank though. I would like to see him vs. Tyson Griffin. Would make a very exciting fight.
Matt Brown— Lost via guillotine choke in the 2nd to Brian Foster. Matt is about to get his walking papers. If by some miracle he gets another shot lets have him take on Nick Osipczak with the loser gone no matter what.
Aaron Simpson— Lost a unanimous decision to Mark Munoz. After losing two straight to Munoz and Chris Leben, I’d like to see him take on another guy with his job on the line. Bring on Alessio Sakara. I don’t know if Sakara or even Simpson’s contract is in jeopardy, but both fighters are far from safe.
Karo Parisyan— Lost via TKO in the 1st round to Dennis Hallman. Well, Parisyan is already cut. He has a top notch agent in Malki Kawa so I am expecting a Strikeforce run. Bellator welterweight tournament with Jay Hieron with the winner of it getting a shot at Ben Askren sounds interesting as well.
Mike Lullo— Lost via TKO via leg kicks to Edson Barboza. He might be 1 and done in the UFC, but if not I wouldn’t mind seeing him take on a guy like Peter Sobotta. Loser is a guaranteed cut.
TJ O’Brien— Lost via TKO in the 2nd to Paul Kelly. Another guy that might be 1 and done. If he gets a 2nd chance have him take on Gabe Ruediger for the chance to stay in the UFC.
Tyson Griffin— Lost a split decision to Nik Lentz. A very tough one for Tyson to swallow as one judge had him winning 30-27. Dana already said he is sticking around despite 3 straight losses due to his exciting style. I would love to see the pre-stated fight of Joe Lauzon vs. Tyson Griffin.
