ESPN has announced that Jim Harbaugh will be the next head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. The deal is expected to be five years for $25 million. Harbaugh just coached Stanford to a 12-1 season and an Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech.
Stanford’s win totals increased every year under Harbaugh. His record at Stanford was 29-21 and an overall head coaching record of 58-27 which includes a three year stint for the San Diego Toreros.
Harbaugh does have NFL experience. He had affiliations with seven different NFL teams as a player and also was the quarterback coach of the Oakland Raiders from 2002-2003.
Harbaugh was widely rumored to be a part of the University of Michigan’s coaching search. He was also widely reported to be in consideration for both the Miami Dolphins and the Denver Broncos coaching vacancies.
