It’s truly hard to believe that just 307 days ago the Texas Longhorns were preparing to play #1 Alabama for the national championship. Ten months and three days later, the Texas Longhorns find themselves at an abysmal 4-5. That’s definitely one BEVO-sized hangover.
Texas now needs to finish 2-1 to even make a bowl game, and that’s no easy task with #10 Oklahoma State, Florida Atlantic and #25 Texas A&M left on the schedule. Texas has already lost three straight games at Royal-Memorial Stadium this year, which hasn’t happened since John Mackovic’s last year as head coach in 1997.
As a coach, Mack Brown’s teams haven’t lost more than five games since his second year at North Carolina in 1989. That’s what makes this so puzzling to college football fans. How does a coach known for “just win baby” have such a terrible down year 307 days removed from playing for the national championship, while commanding a perennial powerhouse that can pick and choose in-state recruits?
Mack, who is known for being supremely loyal to certain coaches, will be forced to make some tough decisions after this abortion of a season is finished.
