BEVO was a sad Longhorn Saturday at Royal-Memorial Stadium as the Texas Longhorns’ season was jackknifed by a 20-point dog. The Horns turned the ball over 5 times, with 2 of the turnovers giving UCLA field position in Texas’ red zone. The Horns must try to regroup, as their next game is in the Cotton Bowl V Oklahoma in the annual Red River Rivalry.
The rest of the Big XII heavyweights didn’t look much better. Oklahoma sucked out a victory over cupcake Cincinnati, and the Cornhuskers struggled to impress V FCS South Dakota State.
Baylor Bears
Baylor 30 @ TCU 13
Grade: B
Baylor regrouped after a humiliating loss to TCU, and Robert Griffin III showed the country that maybe he was just having an off week last game. Griffin’s 3 touchdowns helped Baylor cruise to an easy victory.
Colorado Buffaloes
Colorado Buffaloes were not active this week. (Bye)
Iowa State Cyclones
Northern Iowa 0 @ Iowa St 27
Grade: C+
Although the scoreboard displays a shutout, the Cyclones were crushed in every statistical category. Unfortunately for Northern Iowa, that includes turnovers. Northern Iowa beat itself, as they turned the ball over 5 times.
Kansas Jayhawks
New Mexico St 16 @ Kansas 42
Grade: A
The Jayhawks dominated on both sides of the ball through 4 quarters. It’s just too bad the Jayhawks can’t play at this level every week.
Kansas State Wildcats
UCF 13 @ Kansas St 17
Grade: C
Turnovers nearly doomed the Wildcats’ unbeaten record. Luckily for the Wildcats, QB Coffman ran in for the go-ahead touchdown with just 24 seconds to go in the game.
Missouri Tigers
Miami(OH) 13 @ Missouri 51
Grade: B
Blaine Gabbert again struggled to impress, but his defense forced 3 turnovers as the Tigers remain unbeaten.
Nebraska Cornhuskers
South Dakota St. 3 @ #6 Nebraska 17
Grade: D
A week off their impressive offensive performance, the Cornhuskers struggled to impress against an FCS team. Last week’s standout Taylor Martinez threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. The Blackshirts didn’t do much better, as they allowed 141 yards on the ground to an FCS opponent. Nebraska will have to correct their mistakes if they want to contend for the Big 12 crown.
Oklahoma Sooners
#8 Oklahoma 31 @ Cincinnati 29
Grade: D-
The Sooners are very lucky to still be unbeaten after the Bearcats gave them quite a scare Saturday evening. By all rights the Bearcats didn’t lose to Oklahoma; instead they merely beat themselves. 4 turnovers for the Bearcats, with one occurring near the end zone as a Bearcat was about to score a touchdown. Oklahoma faces a devastated Texas in the Cotton Bowl Saturday, and they better bring their “A” game, because I have a feeling the Texas players will seek redemption.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
Oklahoma State Cowboys were not active this week. (Bye)
Texas Longhorns
UCLA 34 @ #7 Texas 12
Grade: F
The Longhorns suffered their most humiliating loss since the 1997 Rout 66 loss to UCLA. The Longhorns lacked any semblance of discipline V UCLA, as they turned the ball over 5 times. Muschamp’s defense looked impressive through 2 quarters, but with Norm Chow’s second-half adjustments, even the vaunted Texas defense crumbled. Texas next faces Oklahoma @ Red River this Saturday, and if they want to keep their 9-year 10+ win season streak alive, they will need to find an identity.
Texas A&M Aggies
Texas A&M Aggies were not active this week. (Bye)
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Texas Tech Red Raiders were not active this week. (Bye)
