After a wild Week 10, we have a lot of shuffling around in all 3 boards. The Bills finally get their first win, it took til the final 16th second of overtime for the Jets and Browns to decide a winner, and the horrendously disappointing Cowboys shocked the supposedly best NFC team New York Giants. The Patriots dropped a long way to 7th in Top Ten rankings after being beaten by Cleveland. But after the Browns have also beaten the Saints and taken the Jets to OT, it’s obvious that they’re no joke, so New England’s rise in the Week 11 rankings is very justified.
In the Bottom 10, we’ve got a new team in the mix who looked like a Cinderella, however more and more lately that glass slipper seems to be sliding its way off. With Buffalo in the win column, Carolina is officially the worst team in the NFL. They probably were before, but now there’s no arguing it. Then in the MVP race, we’ve also got a great wide receiver returning to the list, but more importantly for the first time all season we have a new number 1. Peyton has been dethroned and if you look to your left it’s not hard to figure out who replaced him. The way Tom Brady manhandled Pittsburgh in the Sunday night game while Peyton played very average against the 2-7 Bengals means a change needed to be made. Here are your Week 10 rankings. Top 10 teams, bottom 10 teams, top 10 players. All these 10’s are making my head spin.
Bottom of the Barrel****
-
St. Louis (NR) Put them in their dome and they’re likely to play well. Take them outside of said dome and they’re like a fish out of water, going 0-4. Don’t misunderstand me, they’re leaps and bounds above last year’s team. Steve Spagnulo and Sam Bradford have worked wonders for the Rams. But they’re not out of the league’s lowest tier just yet afterall. Record: 4-5
-
Denver (4) After looking all but lifeless as of late, the Broncos come out like gangbusters against Kansas City at home this past Sunday, putting up 35 points before the Chiefs even realized the game started. Then Todd Haley refused to shake Josh McDaniels’ hand for “running up the score”. Psst, hey Todd. It’s not the other coach’s fault if you don’t have your team prepared. So Denver makes a 5 spot leap for not just winning, but winning in the most surprising fashion. Record: 3-6
-
Minnesota (10) It’s a shame that Favre’s last season has gone this way, but barring a very unlikely running of the table, the Vikings’ season and Favre’s quest for a 2nd Super Bowl is over. I can hear the fat lady tuning up as we speak. With Green Bay up next, she should be in breaking windows everywhere. They just can’t get it together, and all the anonymous players talking about Childress to the media sure helps matters. Record: 3-6
-
Dallas (3) The Cowboys pulled a complete 180 in their first week without Wade Phillips as their coach. Does that only prove they quit on him? Well it doesn’t help the perception, that’s for sure. It is possible that Jason Garrett is just a better motivator and wouldn’t accept anything less than a 100% effort from America’s Team. Nonetheless, nobody saw them coming out and dominating the Giants the way they did, so they have a nice 4 spot leap to show for it. Still not much of a record to show for it though. Record: 2-7
-
Detroit (8) Well, someone had to be the one to give Buffalo their first one. So why not a Matt Staffordless Lions team? I kept waiting for them to come back and take the game over, but it just didn’t happen. There’s really no shame in it. Depsite Buffalo’s record, they have been in practically every game and don’t quit just because their playoff chances are shot. I did think however that the Lions would be somewhere in the 5 to 7 win range this year, and it’s just going to happen. Another high-round draft pick will come their way in April. Record: 2-7
-
San Francisco (5) They’ve won their last 2 with new starting quarterback Troy Smith running the plays and doing an adequate job. Frank Gore played great and they defeated the Rams in overtime. Singletary may have sounded nuts at the time, but this team could very well go on a run in that extremely weak NFC West and still get into the playoffs. They have the Bucs next at home so it should be a tight one. Record: 3-6
-
Cincinnati (6) Add another one to the long string of losses for the Bengals. One of the league’s most disappointing teams, who most had at least competing for the AFC North again, if not going much further. Terrell Owens has been rejuvenated in Cincy, but that’s maybe the only bright spot. There could be a solution to all the losing on the rise though, they do play Buffalo next. That’s not a guaranteed win by any means, but they should get the job done in that one. Record: 2-7
-
Arizona (7) Another team on a long losing streak, and it just got worst this past Sunday when division rival Seattle slaughtered them on their own home field. Like I said before, it’s just a shame that Larry Fitzgerald’s talents go to waste on this team that became irrelevant the second Kurt Warner announced his retirement. Record: 3-6
-
Buffalo (1) Finally! You really couldn’t help but root for those Bills to get that first win. As I mentioned above, I knew they weren’t worse than Carolina, but at 0-8, you can’t put them anywhere but at the bottom slot. If they didn’t get it against Detroit, I was definitely going to pick them to pull the upset on Cincinnati this Sunday. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Steve Johnson, Freddie Jackson and Paul Posluszny are very important pieces to get another win, possibly two before the season is over. Record: 1-8
-
Carolina (2) There’s just nothing positive I can think of to say about this football team. Going into the season I had them at 5-11 and I’m absolutely floored that I overrated them by this much. Jon Beason is listed as doubtful for Sunday and John Fox rarely plays guys who don’t practice on Wednesday. But it’ll be ok, they’re only playing Baltimore. Record: 1-8
Climbed Out: Seattle (9)
Top of the Pops****
-
Nawlins (10) They had a bye this week so no chance for improvement, but there’s plenty of time for the defending champs to work their way back up the ladder. They’re going to have to come out looking like last year’s Saints to keep up with the red hot Falcons. A Sunday matchup with Seattle should help them do just that. Record: 6-3
-
Baltimore (4) I don’t like to drop them this far, but with the results of the other top ten teams’ games, I didn’t have much choice. The push-off by Roddy White to win the game last Thursday night was an unbelievable non-call. But Atlanta would’ve likely won regardless, as they were in good field position for a field goal. They’ll steamroll Carolina and hope the teams above them sputter out to make their way back up. Record: 6-3
-
Pittsburgh (3) The Patriots made them look just plain bad in the Sunday night game. The final score was 39-26, but even a 13-point spread was deceiving as to how close the game wasn’t. Tom Brady simply lit them up for 350 yards and 3 scores. This is the worst Pittsburgh has looked all year, and it’s ironic that it comes after their Pro Bowl quarterback has been back for a month. Record: 6-3
-
Indianapolis (6) Sure, they got a win over a very bad Bengals team, but the teams above them have looked far more convincing. Even with only Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon as his main available targets, Peyton Manning should have had himself a field day. He ended with less than 200 yards and no touchdowns. A win’s a win, but I’m judging on style points here. Record: 6-3
-
Philadelphia (9) If there’s one game I wish I would’ve watched this week, it’s the Monday night game between the Eagles and Redskins. Mike Vick looked like a Madden player come to life, scoring 6 times in all and putting up over 400 yards in total offense. I almost feel like I’m cheating the Eagles by only moving them up 3 spots after that 59-28 stomping of Washington. Record: 6-3
-
Green Bay (5) Like the Saints, Green Bay had a bye week, so they’ll stay put for the meantime. They’ve really started to come together lately although the run game is still a big concern. They were swept by Minnesota last year. I think this Sunday, they return the favor. Record: 6-3
-
Atlanta (8) Despite the non-call on the offensive pass interference by Roddy White, I’m pushing Atlanta up 4 after a very impressive win over Baltimore. Matt Ryan and Roddy White looked great again. If this team gets homefield in the playoffs, watch out. For now I’ll give the Giants the benefit of the doubt as being the best NFC team, but this upcoming weekend could change my mind. Record: 7-2
-
NY Giants (1) They had to be removed from the throne after not just losing to Dallas, but losing badly. But I’m not going to do anything drastic just yet. Like I said, for now they’re still the best NFC team by a hair over Atlanta. Next week could be a very different story after they face Phily. Record: 6-3
-
NY Jets (2) What a great game they had against Cleveland. I’m just glad it didn’t end in a tie. For the last time, that’s ridiculous that it can even happen in the NFL anymore. So luckily with 16 seconds left in OT, a winner was declared. If it weren’t for a Chanci Stuckey fumble late in the 4th, it could have been a much different story. But the Browns always seem to find a way to give it away. Record: 7-2
-
New England (7) Yes, they are your new #1. A 6-spot leap after the full dish of embarrassment they served up the Steelers in Heinz Field. Some might think it’s too extreme to call them the league’s best team after looking terrible against Cleveland just last week. Cleveland also made the Saints look terrible and took the Jets the distance. So let’s forget about that. Tom Brady did more with less and picked apart the Steeler secondary, looking very MVP-like. I don’t look for Indy to give them much of a fight when they come to Gillette Stadium this Sunday either. Record: 7-2
MVP Race****
-
Eli Manning (7) Drops 3 spots, but still deserves to be in the top 10 after leading the G-Men to a 6-3 start. 33 of 48 for 373 yards in the tough loss to Dallas. 2 TDs and 2 INTs, 1 returned for a pick six.
-
Adrian Peterson (4) Falls quite a bit after Chicago held him in check, giving up just 51 yards on 17 carries.
-
Arian Foster (3) It was bound to happen when he would have a bad game, and it came against the Jags. Only 56 yards on 15 carries. However the Texans were down big and had to do a lot of passing to get back into the game.
-
Roddy White (NR) Maybe the new best receiver in the game? 12 catches for 138 yards and 2 scores against Baltimore last Thursday made it mandatory that he was put back in the top 10.
-
Philip Rivers (6) Had a bye week, but has absolutely carried the Chargers and they’ve got some momentum going. Againt Denver next Monday night, he could really put his team back in the division race.
-
Darren McFadden (5) Also had a bye, but has a great yards per carry average and is among the league’s leading rushers despite missing 2 games due to injury.
-
Chris Johnson (10) Played very well in a loss to Miami, gaining nearly 7 yards per rush with 117 yards on 17 carries, along with 1 very nice touchdown run.
-
Mike Vick (8) Just owned the Redskins, throwing 20 of 28 for 333 yards and 4 TDs. 8 rushes for 80 yards and 2 more TDs. Now has 11 touchdown passes on the season and still not a single interception.
-
Peyton Manning (1) Finally relinquishes the throne after a very average performance against Cincinnati, going just 20 of 36 and throwing for 185 yards. No points through the air.
-
Tom Brady (2) 350 yards and 3 scores on the Steeler D meant a change had to be made. Brady just had that killer instinct Sunday night and when he plays like that, there’s no stopping him. Well deserved.
