Most of you already know this but Islander goaltender Rick DiPietro is going to miss 4-6 weeks due to facial fractures and knee swelling.

The facial fractures came as a result of DiPietro’s fight with Penguin goaltender Brent Johnson. As for the knee swelling, DiPietro said that it was the same issue that they’ve been dealing with since the beginning.

When he was asked about why he fought in the first place DiPietro said that he was “sick of losing”. Apparently frustration took over, and as for checking Cooke chances are the fact that Cooke ran him over 3 times in October probably had something to do with that.

While DiPietro recovers Kevin Poulin will likely take on the duties of #1 goaltender and there have been some discussions as to who it would be that would back him up. These discussion quelled though once the news came out that Joel Martin was signed to a 2-way NHL contract. He was rumored to have been taking shots during the morning skate today.

So to sum this up, DiPietro will be out for a month approximately. Poulin will be the #1 guy, and Martin his backup. Islander fans I know you thought this season couldn’t get any worse but unless Snow comes out of the trading deadline with a 50 goal scorer and a new #1 goalie, this season indeed did go from bad to worse.
