The New England Patriots (6-2) are in Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers, who are also 6-2. Over the last decade or so, matchups between these two teams have been intense and usually have a hand in seeding. Both of these teams need a win to remain in at least a tie for the best record in their respective divisions. Both the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens share the same 6-2 record. Since the 2001 season, the Patriots are 3-2 (Brady 3-1) against the Steelers in the regular season and have won a pair of AFC championship games in Pittsburgh. For regular-season games, Tom Brady has thrown for 271+ yards against the Steelers, which includes 372- and 399-yard performances. This year, the Steelers’ pass defense isn’t stellar by any means. However, the Steelers don’t lose at home often.

When the Steelers Run: Push

While the Steelers are 12th in running and the Patriots are 21st in stopping it, the numbers are the same. Pittsburgh averages 117 yards per game, and that’s what New England surrenders. Rashard Mendenhall will have success running the football as the Patriots look to contain Ben Roethlisberger.

When the Patriots Run: Advantage Steelers

The Patriots will have problems running the football, just like most teams do against that great Steelers front seven. The Patriots are 15th in the NFL in running and the Steelers are first at defending it, surrendering just 58 yards per contest.

When the Steelers Pass: Advantage Steelers

Ben Roethlisberger will likely have a field day as the Patriots don’t generate much of a pass rush. I expect Ben and Heath Miller to connect quite a few times. Hines Ward is crafty and should find ways to get open. I expect 75-100 yards out of him and a score.

When the Patriots Pass: Advantage Patriots

The Steelers’ pass defense isn’t that great, as they rank 24th in passing yards allowed. Tom Brady will likely dink and dunk down the field and get the running backs involved in the passing game.

Special Teams: Advantage Steelers

Pittsburgh ranks 4th in return-yard average while New England ranks 16th. The Steelers rank 7th in return-yard defense and the Patriots rank 22nd. The Steelers rank 7th in punting average while the Patriots rank 21st. Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski is out for the season.

Prediction: Pittsburgh 27, New England 20
