This evening I witnessed one of the greatest performances by an individual athlete I’ve ever seen – the Eagles’ Michael Vick was simply sensational and folks, sensational does not do him justice tonight. The Washington Redskins may have signed Donovan McNabb to a lucrative new deal but boy did Michael Vick make some serious money for himself this evening, as if he hadn’t already.
The Eagles crushed the Redskins 59-28 on Monday Night Football and it wasn’t even that close - Vick was unstoppable, becoming this first player ever with 300 yards passing, 50 yards rushing, four passing and two rushing touchdowns in a single game.
I am not a fan of Michael Vick the person and never really was a supporter of his play until this season but my goodness he is playing out of his mind and his 20-28, 333 yard, six score performance does not begin to tell the full story.
When, on the very first play the Eagles let it fly and Vick placed a perfect ball into the hands of DeSean Jackson, this game was all but over. Vick racked up 80 more yards via the ground and made cuts in the open field that I have only seen elite-level running backs make.
If Vick is not currently the #1 choice for NFL MVP right now I’m not sure why the award exists. He’s been that good. After this game he has eleven touchdowns to zero interceptions and a 115.1 QB rating this season. He’s also rushed for 341 yards on 7.75 YPC in just six games and is averaging an excellent 8.81 YPA through the air.
He’s even completing over sixty-percent of his third-down passes this season - that’s better than even the distinguished Tom Brady!
Part of me can’t believe I’m uttering such praise for this guy - forget the fact that the actions that put him in prison were despicable and unforgivable for second, I’m talking pure football here - his play was always so undisciplined and based purely on his natural talents. Vick was a medicore quarterback before version 2.0 because, quite frankly, he never put in the work required to be exceptional.
Now? I am amazed at how agile and explosive this man is – I know he was a dangerous runner before his prison-time , but when did he learn to play so INTELLIGENTLY? When did Michael Vick begin searching for his third and fourth options on offense? When did he start looking like a crazy combination of a mini-Barry Sanders and Steve Young? When did he learn to evade the rush and stand stall in the pocket? Scary stuff, indeed.
I know I’m overdoing it slightly but that is the fun part of this game - right after watching a six touchdown performance I think we all deserve to be a little bit awestruck.
Yeah, this is that awesome to me, and I’m not afraid to be passionate about it. The Redskins tackling was putrid, I know, but that does not take away from this scintillating performance. Andy Reid deserves an enormous pat on the back for turning Vick into the most dangerous weapon we have in this league right now. His offensive game plans have been scripted to take advantage of Vick’s newly acquired range of skills and right now the Eagles look dangerous because you just never know what you’re going to get.
After the first meeting between these teams (Vick went down with a rib injury in a Redskins win) McNabb went off post-game, saying ""Everybody makes mistakes in their lifetime, and they made one last year.” regarding Philadelphia’s decision to trade him.
I’m guess that they are not quite agreeing with you this morning, Donovan.
You’ll hear more about this game all over the web and television tomorrow so I’m not going to be able to tell you anything you won’t hear over and over. Yet, I felt the need to post this.
I’m not a Michael Vick fan (personally) but I can’t help but say congrats to him – that was one hell of a performance.
I guess this is why we watch - you never know what you might miss.
I’ll head on back over to my little NBA world now.
