Patrick Peterson, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Kerry Rhodes, and Adrian Wilson. Ladies and gentlemen, the projected starting secondary for the Arizona Cardinals. Along with Darnell Dockett and Calaisus Campbell, they align to make a Voltron-like robot of defensive power.
Are you kidding me? This sounds like a franchise in Madden. The Cardinals are one move away from being a legitimate Super Bowl contender. That move is the acquisition of Kevin Kolb.
Don’t get me wrong, Kolb is still unproven. However, in comparison to the Cardinals’ current quarterbacks, Kolb is a step up. When you factor in his Brett Favre-like potential, the prospect of that arm with the Cardinals’ stable of receivers has to make an offensive coordinator’s mouth water. Why give an unproven quarterback such a high comparison? Kolb’s performed well in his NFL appearances. His stats may be mediocre, but he made those plays that some quarterbacks can make and others can’t, and ultimately it’s that potential that is Kolb’s greatest asset.
Unfortunately, he hasn’t had much of an opportunity to build much more of a resume than that. He’s not only a good fit because of skills on the field, but also because of the positive effect the move would have on the Cards’ fan base. Let’s be honest, everyone knew Kurt Warner was only a temporary fix, and since the disappointments of Matt Leinart and Derek Anderson at quarterback, the fans haven’t had any kind of long term hope at the position. And as for the possibility of Mark Bulger, Kolb is younger with more potential, and hasn’t taken the beating that Bulger took in St Louis. Not to mention that it could establish some continuity within the locker room at the position that requires the most consistency and presence.
Because of the lockout, this is all speculation, even more so than normal, however just think about it. The Cardinals’ ferocious young defense alongside one of the NFL’s best receiving cores, with a young talented quarterback bringing it all together, would have them poised to make a run at a division title. It doesn’t hurt that the NFC West is the most winnable division in the league. Sounds like Larry Fitz would have another chance to shine under the brightest of lights this winter, with Kolb delivering thunderbolts from above.
