The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will be playing in the old country in 2012, and thousands of Irish Catholic supporters are expected to descend on Ireland to watch the Golden Domers take on the Navy Midshipmen in Dublin. This will be the fourth Emerald Isle Classic. The first was held in 1988 at Lansdowne Road (now Aviva Stadium), and featured the Boston College Eagles vs. Army Black Knights. The event drew over 42,000 fans, and prompted a second Classic in 1989. That game was played between the Pittsburgh Panthers and Rutgers Scarlet Knights, with Pitt winning a 46-29 contest. The Emerald Isle Classic then went on hiatus until 1996, when Notre Dame took on, and beat, Navy. While the Classic was originally suspended because of lackluster attendance in Year Two, the 2012 Emerald Isle Classic is expected to be a very popular event, both among fans in Ireland, and with Irish-American football fans.
